Yesterday, the National Park Service posted a livestream of new puppies at Denali National Park whose father is a dog used by Fairbanks-based Sage Mountain Kennels. The facility—owned by a musher who participated in last year’s Iditarod—will select two of the puppies to come back to the kennel, where they may be used in harrowing and deadly dog-sled races, including the Iditarod. The rest of the puppies will be used by the park service as “canine rangers,” used to patrol the park and haul supplies.

At least 157 dogs have died in the Iditarod since its inception—and up to half the dogs are pulled off the trail because they’re too exhausted, ill, or injured to continue. Please see the following statement from PETA President Tracy Reiman:

A livestream of cute puppies who may be run to their deaths in the Iditarod is as morbid as video of calves on a veal farm. When animal shelters everywhere are overrun with homeless animals, no breeder anywhere has any business churning out more puppies, and PETA encourages everyone to ignore these stunts, steer clear of dogsled rides, and adopt from shelters and never buy from greedy breeders.

During this year’s Iditarod, a 4-year-old dog named Charley died on the trail after being forced to run more than 800 miles. A new white paper compiled by PETA offers damning evidence of long-distance endurance racing’s harmful impact on dogs’ health, including heart conditions, muscle breakdown, and chronic inflammation.

Additionally, with millions of homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. at any given time, animal shelters across the country have been overwhelmed for years. Breeding more dogs—whether for racing or any other purpose—exacerbates this crisis. That’s why PETA reminds everyone to always adopt, never buy animals from breeders or pet stores, and always have companion animals spayed or neutered.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
