Just in time for International Respect for Chickens Day—and with gas prices sky-high—PETA’s Commando Chicks are coming to the rescue of birds and budgets. Dressed in feathered fatigues and combat boots, the radiant regiment will report for duty at the Woodward Avenue Shell station on Monday, where they’ll pay ten dollars towards the first 100 drivers’ tank of gas and get passersby pumped about plant-powered eating by handing out Unburger Grill’s delicious vegan chicken.

“While drivers face high prices at the pump, gentle chickens pay the ultimate price with their lives, so we’re giving a helping hand to both,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “Vegan chicken is in the stores now, and with zero cholesterol it could even reduce your health costs!”

Why:               Chickens dream when they sleep and worry about the future, just as humans do—but in the meat industry, chickens are confined by the tens of thousands to severely crowded, filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At slaughterhouses, mechanized blades slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious—and many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.

Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year. Many vegan foods—including pasta, rice, tofu, and beans—cost significantly less than meat made from animals, so vegan food can feed far more people than the equivalent amount of meat. In addition to saving money at the grocery store, vegans are also less likely to suffer from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and obesity, which can help prevent high medical bills in the future. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a chicken is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
