As travelers look ahead to summer getaways, PETA is spotlighting the nation’s most compassionate stays with its inaugural Hospitality with Heart Awards—and Schuyler’s own The White Pig has made the list. Holding the title of the oldest operating vegan bed & breakfast in the U.S., The White Pig boasts an expansive 172-acre setting of serene meadows and forests that doubles as a sanctuary home to nearly 60 rescued animals—including pigs, sheep, horses, and goats—creating an immersive, restorative getaway rooted in compassion.
Each morning begins with a complimentary gourmet vegan breakfast prepared by chef and owner Dina Brigish, featuring dishes such as organic Belgian waffles and savory broccoli quiche. From there, guests can unwind with an on-site Swedish massage, soak in the hot tub while taking in breathtaking views of Appleberry Mountain, row down the James River, or take a scenic drive along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. Founded in 2000, the retreat features a range of lodgings, from a mid‑century farmhouse and a stunning Victorian to a cozy, secluded cottage.

“The White Pig is a tranquil retreat where guests can take in Virginia’s stunning natural beauty and savor thoughtfully crafted vegan meals,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “Every winner on PETA’s list proves how easy it is to travel kindly, leave animals in peace, and make humane, healthy choices along the way.”
Other winners on PETA’s list include (in no particular order) Pebble Cove Farm Inn and Animal Sanctuary in Eastsound, Washington; Deer Run on the Atlantic in Big Pine Key, Florida; The Cozy Cottage at Grateful Meadows in West Point, Virginia; The Gray Barn at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls, New York; Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York; and Rancho Vegano in Tucson, Arizona.
Each winner will receive a framed certificate from PETA along with bragging rights.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat, wear, or use for entertainment”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
