Have mercy! Bearing signs reading, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice… if Orcas Were Free?,” PETA supporters and members of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida will rally against The Beach Boys concert with John Stamos at SeaWorld on Sunday, calling them out for supporting the abusement park despite being aware that dolphins and whales at the facility are denied everything that’s natural to them and that dolphins are sexually abused and sometimes drugged so they can’t fight back in its breeding program.
“God only knows what The Beach Boys and John Stamos are thinking playing at this cruel abusement park, where complex marine mammals are condemned to a lifetime of misery in a dismal concrete tank,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on the band to stick to Key Largo or Montego for tour stops and stop promoting cruel confinement of animals at SeaWorld until it releases these long-suffering animals to seaside sanctuaries.”
Where: 7007 Sea World Dr. (at the intersection with Central Florida Pkwy.), Orlando
When: Sunday, March 22, 6:30 p.m.
Why: In nature, orcas have sophisticated social relationships, working cooperatively to find food and traveling vast distances in the open ocean every day. But at SeaWorld, they’re housed in tanks so cramped and shallow that they can do little more than float listlessly or swim in endless circles while fending off attacks from their stressed tankmates. More than 40 orcas and over 500 other dolphins and whales have died in SeaWorld’s dismal tanks, many prematurely.
A recent poll commissioned by PETA and conducted by Embold Research found that 77 percent of registered voters in California—The Beach Boys’ home state—support a ban on breeding dolphins, and 74 percent want dolphins in marine parks to be moved to seaside sanctuaries.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
