On Monday, PETA supporters wearing oversized camel masks will descend on the Egyptian Embassy to protest the Egyptian government’s failure to abate beatings, malnourishment, and deaths of camels and horses forced to haul tourists around the Great Pyramids. This follows the release of a new PETA exposé showing dead horses piled up in a secret graveyard, and severely emaciated camels and horses being struck repeatedly and suffering from untreated wounds.

“In Egypt’s greedy tourism industry, camels and horses are kicked, whipped, starved, and treated like disposable equipment,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA wants tourist rides banned now in favor of electric carts to spare Egypt’s horses and camels from suffering and abuse.”

When:             Monday, December 15, 12 noon

Where:           Outside the Embassy of Egypt, at the intersection of Range Road and Laurier Avenue East

Why:               Over the past six years, PETA has documented horses and camels in Egypt’s tourism industry being violently abused and dying in record numbers. Forced to carry people in the blistering heat without shade or adequate water, they’re eventually left for dead or sent to slaughter when they are too old, sick, or injured to be profitable.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kitsfor people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
