Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Wapello County Rural Volunteer Fire Department in recognition of their fire chief’s bravery and determination in rescuing a frightened dog who fell through ice and was struggling to stay afloat in a partially frozen pond in Ottumwa.

Fire Chief Loren McIntosh sprang into action after receiving a call from the sheriff’s office about a dog who was spotted treading water and unable to climb onto the ice. McIntosh rushed to the scene and used a nearby kayak to pull the dog, named Doug-Doug, to safety. Doug-Doug was shivering and in shock but was otherwise in good health and reunited with his guardians.

“This dog was likely minutes away from a terrifying death in icy waters, but is now safe and warm at home with his family thanks to the quick action of Chief McIntosh,” says PETA Vice President and Ottumwa native Heather Carlson. “PETA encourages everyone to follow his example by acting swiftly whenever they see an animal in need.”

PETA is sending a framed certificate to the Wapello County Rural Fire Department, along with PETA mugs, delicious vegan hot chocolate, and vegan marshmallows.
