Because Vermont has the lowest fertility rate in the U.S.—and the consumption of estrogen-loaded dairy cheese is linked with decreased semen quality—a PETA supporter dressed as a not-so-little swimmer will plant a seed about going vegan at Church Street Marketplace on Thursday by handing out hundreds of animal-friendly cheese snacks. The fertilization-facilitating fromage free-for-all is part of a nationwide giveaway that will deliver 50,000 pieces of vegan cheese to the uninitiated across the country.
“Cow’s milk is loaded with saturated fat, and ditching dairy can make the difference between shooting blanks in the bedroom and finishing strong,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “Whether someone wants to conceive a better world for animals or simply just conceive, PETA is encouraging everyone to make the switch to delicious, creamy vegan cheeses.”
Where: Church Street Marketplace, (near the corner of Church Street and Banks Street), Burlington
When: Thursday, September 25, 12 noon

Why: Cows have friends and mourn when a loved one dies or when they’re separated from each other, yet in the dairy industry, female cows are forcibly impregnated and have their beloved calves stolen from them so the milk meant to nourish their babies can be sold to humans. Newborn males are slaughtered for veal, while female calves endure the same fate as their mothers until their bodies wear out and they’re sent to slaughter.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
