10 Small Acts, Big Impact

Issue 3|Summer 2025

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted, “The time is always right to do what’s right.” Every day, opportunities knock, and putting your compassion into action is as easy as a walk in the park – literally! You can pick up litter that dogs could cut their paws on or birds could become entangled in. Perhaps exchange a few pleasantries (“What an intelligent face your dog has!”) with dog guardians and then talk about prong and choke collars if they’re being used. You could also bake a vegan pie for someone who isn’t vegan or give them some other tasty vegan food to set them on their path. Here are other easy ideas from PETA supporters who are making a difference.

Too Hot for Spot

Residents of Central Point, Oregon, convinced downtown business owners to post signs alerting dog walkers to the scorching hot pavement. Tell everyone: When it’s warm outside, walk dogs on grass – not pavement – during the coolest parts of the day, and give them plenty of water!

A Window Into Animals’ Souls

Rae and Bob had PETA’s “Every Animal Is Someone” logo made into a custom minivan wrap. Our Production team can customize one for you, too. E-mail [email protected].

From Farmer to Freer

Harper was distressed to learn that Onion, the lamb she was caring for in a Future Farmers of America program, would be bred for years and eventually slaughtered. With help from peta2 – PETA’s high school and college division – she raised money to buy Onion and found her a loving sanctuary home. Harper’s persistence despite opposition and backlash earned her PETA’s Compassion in Action Award. Her advice? “Fear regret more than rejection.”

Hot Dog, She Did It

When Jennifer heard that her church was planning to serve hot dogs at an event, she talked to organizers about showing compassion to all of creation. The event’s vegan hot dogs were a hit.

Mail-In Debate

Students in California told their friends how cows die for animal-skin patches on Levi’s jeans. They collected patches to send to the company with a note reading, “The time to switch to vegan leather is NOW!” You can reach out, too.

They Came out of Their Shells to Save Turtles

When a couple vacationing in Zanzibar saw that their hotel was displaying sea turtles in cramped, barren concrete pools, they expressed their deep concern to the manager and contacted PETA. We informed the resort owner that holding the protected species captive was not only cruel but also likely illegal, and staff sent us photos of the animals being returned to their natural habitat along with a promise not to display wildlife ever again.

More Ways to Make a Difference

Make sure the medical charities you support aren’t funding experiments on animals.

Buy a vegan meal for the car behind you in a drive-through or give a vegan product to the next person in a checkout line.

If businesses you patronize sell glue traps, foie gras, fur, or other cruel items, speak to the manager or write to the corporate customer service team and suggest alternatives.

Carry a rescue kit in your car to assist injured animals. Visit the PETA Shop or make your own.

A Few Short Lines Go a Long Way

Shirley says, “As a longtime activist, I’ve had almost 30 letters to the editor published on chick-hatching projects, plant-based eating, vivisection, hunting, SeaWorld, fur, and more!”

    This Kind Kid Gets ‘It’

PETA Kids member Leah made an “It” jar to help her family remember to refer to animals as “he,” “she,” or “they” instead of “it.”

    Good Cents

Lia donated the proceeds from her yard sale to her local shelter.

    She Sparkles for Homeless Animals

When Brazilian singer Taty Girl noticed that a homeless dog had wandered into her concert and was frightened by the onstage fireworks, she called off the pyrotechnics, saying, “We will not launch any more fireworks – Caramelo does not like them.” Fans cheered and urged her to adopt the sweet dog, and she did! To homeless animals, every adopter is a celebrity. Always adopt – never shop.
