Today, PETA’s attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding that Tucson-based Labubu imitator BunnyLulu—maker of rabbit fur keychains and plushies—stop marketing its cruel products as “handmade with love” and “perfect for … any bunny lover.” PETA points out that BunnyLulu’s misleading marketing claims have seemingly led customers to believe and spread on social media that the fur is obtained by simply brushing live rabbits. But as PETA’s letter states, consumers would be horrified to learn they’ve unwittingly purchased real fur from the near-defunct fur industry, where animals spend their lives crammed into small wire cages and workers typically electrocute, gas, or beat them to death.

“Selling trinkets made with real rabbit fur and promoting them as perfect for ‘bunny lovers’ is like serving a poodle burger to a dog lover,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on BunnyLulu to stop duping kind consumers into buying fur from terrified rabbits who lived in filth and misery and died in agony, and switch to the ultra soft faux fur that compassionate shoppers want.”
BunnyLulu’s products are apparently imported by its parent company, Hopeworks (Shenzhen) Technology Co., from China, where there are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms. A PETA Asia investigation into Chinese fur farms found that thousands of rabbits were confined in tiny cages, kept outside in all weather extremes, and denied treatment for injuries. At the slaughterhouse, workers hit them on the backs of their heads with a knife, hung them upside down, and slit their throats. Some were still kicking as the skin was torn from their bodies.
In addition, PETA’s letter points out that California has banned the sale of new fur products, but BunnyLulu’s products made with rabbit fur are available for purchase in California by California consumers, in apparent violation of this ban.
