Scrambling for the win! Following a massive spike in bird flu cases, which brought egg prices to an all-time high, and with the next zoonotic disease outbreak potentially right around the corner, PETA is announcing its picks for the nation’s Top Eggsellent Vegan Breakfast Sandwiches, serving up savory vegan egg dishes that also satisfy a craving for compassion.

The selected sandwiches feature scrumptious vegan hollandaise sauce and tofu bacon in The Renedict from Austin’s woman-owned Bouldin Creek Cafe, and turmeric tofu scramble, vegan sausage, and Gochujang ketchup in the Vegan Breakfast Wrap from The Eatery of WLFD in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Hungry patrons seeking something smoky can indulge in the Smoky Chipotle Bacon & Egg Sandwich from Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Coco Bistro & Bar, or the Breakfast Sandwich from Charleston, South Carolina’s Huriyali, made with chickpea mash, cashew cheese, and smoky tempeh. Other winners from PETA’s list that are sure to delight include the Bac’n, Egg and Cheese Biscuit from Albuquerque’s Lucky GooseRascal’s Vegan Breakfast Sandwich in Santa Barbara, California featuring plant-based sausage, seasoned tofu, and vegan mayo; The Venetian Breakfast Bagel Sandwich from Hollycake House in East Rochester, New York; and the Breakfast Sandwich from Pittsburgh’s Allegro Bakery made with oat cheese, tofu egg, tomato mayo, and house-made sausage on a Brioche roll.

“These cracking good sandwiches are kind to chickens and their eaters’ arteries, and are bursting with flavor,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Every winner on PETA’s awards list shows that delicious vegan eggs can start your day right in every way.

Chickens form complex social structures, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do. But hens used for egg production are crammed together inside filthy, wire-floored cages where they don’t even have enough room to spread their wings. These conditions also create breeding grounds for diseases like the bird flu, and according to the CDC, three out of every four new or emerging infectious diseases in humans originate in animals.

The winners will receive a framed certificate from PETA along with bragging rights.

Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
