Following numerous complaints filed by PETA over rampant violations of animal welfare laws at West Coast Game Park Safari, law enforcement officials executed multiple search warrants at the roadside zoo last week and, as of today, have removed 310 animals from the decrepit facility. Three animals—a camel, kinkajou, and chicken—were in such poor condition that they had to be euthanized following veterinary evaluation. Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Senior Director of Captive Wildlife Debbie Metzler:
“After years of brazenly flouting bare minimum animal welfare laws, West Coast Game Park Safari must finally face up to the suffering it inflicted on scores of animals it kept confined in filthy, decrepit enclosures. PETA is calling for this hellhole to be permanently shut down, the survivors to get the care they desperately need, and everyone to avoid roadside zoos as if lives depended on it, because they do.”
Photos of animals held at West Coast Game Park can be found here.
PETA previously submitted multiple formal complaints to Oregon State Police alerting them to apparent felony animal neglect at West Coast Game Park Safari, among other violations of Oregon law and regulations. The facility was cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture just weeks ago for repeated violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act after a lion, lioness, and African leopard were found in the same thin condition they had been in during the previous inspection. The facility’s attending veterinarian stated that West Coast Game Park Safari had not even contacted him about these animals since the last USDA inspection.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
