Ruckus at Austin Aquarium to Warn Guests of Animal Attacks

“Warning: Animals Attacked Guests!” and “Animal Deaths and Neglect Inside”—those messages will be displayed outside the Austin Aquarium by PETA supporters this Saturday. The action follows PETA’s recent investigation into the indoor petting zoo and strip mall aquarium, in which the group’s eyewitness documented 27 separate incidents in which lemurs bit members of the public, including children, or staff. The exposé also revealed that staff lost a large number of snakes, left injured animals to suffer, left a dying lizard outside to die, tried to crush a rat to death with a cinderblock, and other horrors.

“If families knew that lemurs might bite their children’s fingers or that snakes could drop from the aquarium’s ceiling without warning, they’d turn around and never look back,” says PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Michelle Sinnott. “PETA is urging everyone to steer clear of this hotbed of cruelty and for Austin officials to shut it down, before anyone else gets hurts.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
