Arlington Girl Wins PETA Award for Birthday Wish

A Hero to Animals Award from PETA Kids—PETA’s youth division—is on its way to 7-year-old Brooklyn Murray, who helped Christmas arrive early this year at a Memphis animal shelter. To celebrate her birthday, the Arlington resident asked friends and family to donate food, treats, supplies, and toys for dogs and cats in need at the shelter instead of giving her gifts.
“To homeless animals in Memphis, Brooklyn Murray is their very own Santa Claus,” says PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs Marta Holmberg. “PETA Kids is celebrating her huge heart, her efforts for dogs and cats, and the kind example that she’s setting for people of all ages.”
PETA Kids points out that approximately 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time. The group urges families to adopt animals from shelters instead of buying them from breeders or pet stores—and never to give them as surprise gifts for the holidays, as adding an animal to the family is a lifelong commitment that requires careful consideration.
