PETA is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for dumping an emaciated, dying ferret in a carrier on the side of Johnstons Road. A good Samaritan contacted PETA’s after-hours emergency line after finding the animal in a filthy, feces-encrusted blue cat carrier unable to stand or even hold up his head and with feces caked onto his hind legs. PETA rushed him to an emergency clinic, where a veterinarian determined that the animal had to be euthanized.

An investigation by Norfolk’s Animal Protection Unit is underway, and PETA is hoping for public assistance to solve the case.

“PETA and other animal shelters are here to help the community with resources to prevent animals like this vulnerable ferret from suffering and slowly starving to death in a cage by the side of the road,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Please never abandon an animal—make a call for help instead. And if you find an animal in need, spring into action as this good Samaritan did.”

Anyone with information about this case should contact PETA at 757-622-PETA (757-622-7382).

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
