More Indictments for Aviagen Turkey Abusers

As horrible as the findings were, our undercover investigation at Aviagen has proven to be the gift that keeps on giving—giving out indictments to those we caught on video abusing animals, that is.

Quick review: A PETA investigator went undercover on Aviagen’s turkey factory farms in West Virginia and gathered evidence that workers broke turkeys’ necks, stomped on their heads, and shoved feces and feed into turkeys’ mouths. This evidence led to the first-ever indictments for felony cruelty-to-animals charges for abusing birds, and the first-ever cruelty convictions of turkey factory-farm workers.

Aviagen’s farms are spread out over multiple counties in West Virginia, which means that workers were subject to prosecution in each county where they abused or neglected these intelligent, sensitive birds. The first indictments were handed down in Greenbrier County, and now further felony indictments have been issued in Monroe County against Walter Hambrick and Scott White. White was already convicted in Greenbrier County of the cruelty he committed there, and he went to jail. Hambrick—whose charges in Greenbrier County are still pending—now faces three more felonies just a few minutes down the road.

Of course, it’s easy as (eggless, nondairy) pie to stop contributing to factory farm and slaughterhouse cruelty—like the kind at Aviagen, Belcross, AgriProcessors, Pilgrim’s Pride, and too many others to mention—simply by going vegetarian.

im glad those disgusting physcopath pieces of dirt got there charges i still think they should have a much harsher sentence for that if they did that to a human it would be 25 years in jail it dispicable that people who are obviously bullys and cowards can work in these places and take advantage of these defenceless lives.

I am so happy with the ongoing effort that PETA is putting into this case! I agree with a comment previously mentioned… “PETA IS EVERYWHERE….WHY NOT DO THE RIGHT THING AND SAVE YOURSELVES THE EMBARASSMENT AND LEGALITY BEHIND IT?” But as mentioned before! People still don’t learn! It’s sad but true…But as long as PETA is behind their evil doings then animals can rest assure that they don’t and will not stand and fight alone!

I will have to agree with some other comments made. not everyone will every be totally vegan but maybe more aware of what happens to the meat before they are eating it!! it truly does make you think twice when you read these stories!! some people grow up to hunt to provide to their families not to torture them and do sadistic things to the animals in inhumane ways. everyone has to find there own way in this world some take longer then others!! PETA ROCKS bringing awareness to us and I LOVE THAT!! THANK YOU!!

Responding to the question posed in the first post “Why can’t they just do the right thing and not be disrespectful and just plain mean to animals”? Why? Because in spite of all the undercover investigations and exposure of this stomach turning cruelty they CAN still get away with their barbaric treatment! So many workers on these factory farms are poorly educated destitute immigrants or just plain don’t give a damn about animals. Why is it that prosecutors don’t focus on the repetitive cruel acts these workers must perform hundreds of times a day five days a week when presenting evidence to prosecute such cruelty? Do they not catch just a glimpse of what this livelihood? does to a person’s psyche? It robs what little feeling a person may have for an animal. Could you continue if you cared? Everyone who expresses outrage about the way food animals are treated must understand that it is because of each and every one of us our desire for and love affair with animal flesh that perpetrates this horror. Most people couldn’t kill and butcher their own animals for food. They have no concept of the animal beyond it’s red or pink flesh neatly wrapped up in cellophane resting in the meat display case at their grocery store. And NO! humaneorganicallyraised is not a solution! There is nothing truly “humane” about having a captive bolt slammed into your brain and your neck slit and hung up by your leg to bleed to death. Yes animals are frequently NOT rendered unconscious and have been documented being dissmembered ALIVE! Human beings have a lot of evolving to do. We are nothing more than fashionablyclad heathens with cellphones glued to our ears when it comes to understanding animal cruelty and suffering. You have just dined and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in a graceful distance of miles there is complicity. Ralph Waldo Emerson

You would think that people would learn by now PETA is everywhere…all slaughter houses egg wharehouses EVERY WHERE just WAITING for idiots to mistreat animals. Why cant they just do the right thing and not be disrespectful and just plain mean to animals???!!!???

  • Mel says:

While you’ll probably never get everyone to go totally vegan at least you’re making sure that people are safe and that turkeys have a more humane death than what happened here.
