‘Free’ Puppies Tortured and Killed

A West Virginia man faces 29 charges of cruelty to animals after allegedly using various tools to torture and kill at least 29 dogs and puppies over the course of several months. According to reports, Jeffrey Nally Jr. told police that he got the dogs from ads in the local newspaper and that the animals were all free or just a few dollars. Apparently illustrating the link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to people, Nally is also charged with allegedly keeping his former girlfriend captive in the home for months, forcing her to watch him torture the animals, and then making her clean up the mess. West Virginia State Police rescued the woman, along with three live puppies whom they believe were slated to be killed.

As horrific as it sounds, cases like this are not uncommon. Perhaps the most famous case is that of Barry Herbeck, who tortured, sodomized, and killed nearly two dozen animals whom he obtained through “free to a good home” ads. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Classified ads are magnets for abusers who would not be approved for adoption from animal shelters. (Nally was reportedly a convicted criminal under home confinement when he allegedly obtained the dogs.) Animal dealers also target such ads as sources of animals they later sell to laboratories for experiments.

If your local newspaper runs “free to a good home” ads, please contact the paper’s editors, warn them about the dangers of these ads, and ask them to stop running them. And if you see such ads, call the number listed and urge the animals’ guardians to take the animals to an animal shelter instead.

This makes me literally sick. I don’t even know what could possibly make someone so sick as to do this.

sometimes i think someone in my neighborhood is doing insane things to animals. they do not sound happy ever.

  • toughchic2325 says:

OMG!!!! i called my local paper a yr n a half ago and they placed a notice reguarding free pet ads. it helped a little and i check the paper every week and if i see free pet ads i call the ppl and i personally take the animal to a no kill shelter.

It’s unconscionable. All of us can’t understand it because sane people don’t have this capacity. This has bothered me since the day I read it, and I can’t get past it. If 29 children were tortured and killed, it would be the front page news of every news outlet in the world. This gets passing attention in some markets, mostly local. I’ve read local blogs about this guy, and he apparently has a history of mental instability, Its no excuse. Try him, hang him, bury him under the jail, burn down that jail, and nuke the entire site from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

Keith, there may be just a God, but that doesn;t guarentee just humanity. Trust me, a just God does NOT approve of what most of us do, but it’s in our free will to do it anyways. Otherwise, we’d just be robots.

time for things to change – what you do to another living should be done to you – to torture these animals – you have to be nuts – get rid of these people and i don’t mean lock up – our world doesn’t need this kind of person around he isn’t worth the ground to bury him – stand up and be heard!!!!!!!!!! please fix your animals so this can help stop this. there are to many pets not wanted – be a resposiable owner

  • keith says:

Tip of the iceberg sadly ! how many tens of millions of pure sadistic evil humanity are in this world along with animal experimenters the list is infinite ! for sure they deserve no air to breathe.. and please no one spout about a just God there is not one !

  • Sara says:

This is absolutely disgusting! I can’t even get my head around what happened to those poor innocent puppies. I hope this person is convicted and sent to jail where he’ll get the same treatment as those puppies.

  • nora marasco says:

Jeffrey Nally Jr should be exterminated immediately. No time or tax payer dollars should be wasted on this murderer. Extermination is the only way to stop this monster. If he is allowed to live, he will keep doing this.

  • Rachel says:

Give that worthless idiot the death penalty.

  • april401 says:

i want to start a page to bring unwanted healthy puppies to people that want them

  • Greg says:

This case really bothered me when I seen it on my local news. That Jeffrey Nally Jr is a real scum ball that,in my opinion, deserves to be shot at the very least. I am going to write my local newspapers and request that they no longer run “Free to a good home” ads.

I had a neighbor who took care of my dog for a short while when I returned home my dog couldn’t hardly stand and has been hurting in his legs ever since 4 years ago. All I have to say is never, ever let anyone take care of your animal while you are away. I couldn’t prove a thing and the police did nothing beware of people who are too fond of your dog.

  • Melissamae4444 says:

I completly agree that these animals need to be in shelters in stead of just given to anyone who will take them. You know you are asking for the wrong kind of people when animals are just given away.

  • Melanie says:

This just disgusts me…HOW can people be so cruel to such beautiful and innocent animals, please god may they know love and peace in their lives, I am just spechless over all the unesscary horrors that people put creatures of this earth through. My heart breaks every time I hear of another act against them…

  • Shrishailam says:

Such people should not only be given imprisonment, but they should also be tortured in the same way as they tortured the animals. Only then they will come to know the pain that animals go through.

Once again, we show exactly what we are. Not special creatures set apart by a invisible being but animals, and not very nice. What is it in the human animal that must be this way because the impulse is the same, whether directed to other species or humans. It is imperative to be aware and offer compassion. Do not turn away. Even a bowl of water and food can make a difference in the life of animals.

Please make sure that this man is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws and that he is forbidden to own or have any animals in this possession for the remainder of his life!!

This guy should be locked up and never let out again. Lock him up with some real bad guys and see how tough he is.

  • Deepa Mathur says:

Why torture the pups? Can’t get it.Guess he must mentally unstable?

  • Shawna says:

People like this shouldn’t even be taken to trial. People who live to torture other creatures have lost their right to live.

  • Squillions says:

Tattoo “Attention: Serial Killers, Rapists and Sadists: I am your next victim!” on his forehead. As long as those people have to walk the earth, why not label the people who deserve to be their victims, like this worthless piece of sh*t? I’ve had it with trying to maintain diplomacy when I read about these monstrous beasts.

I saw an ad for a free pet and I contacted the person. I told her sometimes people sell them to laboratories and she said she would pull the ad. I’m not sure who she was or if she was being honest, but it’s important to inform the people. They may not know.

  • sarah says:

This is so heart breaking and disgusting! I want to cry to think of what those poor animals went through and I personally have always distrusted “free to a good home” ads. I don’t know how people can give away the lives of animals to complete strangers who could potentially do something like this to them. This is one reason I’m not a fan of the Craig’s list pet section, where people give animals away like an old piece of furniture left outside. As much as I know local s.p.c.a.’s are over crowded and sometimes put unwanted animals to sleep it seems like a better idea to have someone make the effort to pay adoption fees.
