Beluga Whale Dies at SeaWorld

Written by Ashley Palmer | July 4, 2014

If there’s a heaven, Ruby’s in it—and if not, nothingness beats living in misery at SeaWorld as this beluga has done for the past 17 years. She was captured at only 2 years old and separated from her loving pod forever—all to satisfy an amusement park owner’s greed.

SeaWorld used Ruby for many years as a breeding machine in order to retain its dwindling population of captive beluga whales for exhibit. As with most marine mammals who cannot breed in captivity, having been deprived of all that is natural and important to them, Ruby was artificially inseminated. She rejected her first born in 2008, and her calf died one month later.

PETA and the millions of people who watched Blackfish understand the grim reality behind SeaWorld’s business. SeaWorld must close and return these magnificent animals to their full and wonderful lives in the oceans where they belong.

SeaWorld is not the only one to blame here. Ruby was caught off the coast of Manitoba by the US Navy Marine Mammal Program, with the full consent of the Canadian government, for a project called “Cold Ops,” which trained belugas to locate sunken torpedoes in Arctic waters. As with most Navy cetaceans, the Federal Government deemed her ineligible for return to the wild, which is why she was “retired” to SeaWorld.

  • This is another reason Seaworld needs to take a look at the captivity of whales and dolphins. These highly intelligent animals are treated like domesticated animals instead free roaming . They swim hundreds of miles in their habitats, It is killing their spirit!

  • susanna minacheili says:

boycott sea world (Y) set the whales and dolphins free (Y) they don’t belong to captivity (Y) sea world is a prison ………….

  • McKenna says:

I have seen Blackfish, and I have shown others to spread the word. SeaWorld needs to be closed down. This is so cruel. LET THEM BE FREE!

  • sharyn baker says:

I watched blackfish and am saddened by what i saw. When i was young i went to san deigo sea world and thought it was great fun watching the animals perform. Now i know better. What right does anyone have to take these beautiful animals from their familys and the ocean and make them perform and live in tiny tanks ? They have no right at all. The greed of these people is just unreal. : ( Its no wonder these intelligent animals have killed trainers. They have every right after what they have gone through.

SeaWorld lies again, now about lifespan of beluga whales at around 30 years to cover up the premature death 2 days ago of this whale imprisioned for 17 years in a small tank. National geographic reports 30-50 yrs, & a 2006 published scientific study in the Canadian Journal of Zoology has radiocarbon dental data that reports the life expectancy of wild beluga whales is 70 or 80 years. SeaWorld is notorious for distorting scientific information to make more bucks from mammals suffering from life captivity.

  • Barbara Garcia says:

That is just not right to do to any animal

  • greta stifel says:

  • Souri says:

Please return these wonderful animal back to the sea their family waiting for them. What if you are captive and your family need to hug you or see you free. Its not fair what seaWorld doing to these creatures. Free willy!

  • Adrine says:

Very sad to hear that… I never support sea world and help my friends and family understand that as well

  • Adelina says:

free the animals immediately this is cruel!

  • Judy Flanagan says:

There is no excuse for the death of the Beluga Whale nor any of the Orca Whales all of whom were stolen from their families in the ocean. It’s time to rethink how all animals are kept and treated, but more than that, it’s time to do the right thing and return them to the oceans and their families. You’ve enslaved them long enough.

  • Return these Animals to their natural environment.

  • I will NEVER set foot into Sea World.

  • Nathan Scott says:

    How do,these places till exist,barbaric.

  • Jeannie Stoddart says:

    Don’t support Seaworld
These beautiful animals must be freed from their misery and returned to the wild
