2009 - Dollar General Dumps Glue Traps From Shelves
After receiving complaints that Dollar General was selling glue traps (the cruelest method of wildlife control), we wrote to Dollar General executives and urged them to stop selling glue traps immediately. Upon learning about the cruelty of these traps, representatives of the massive bargain retailer told us that the chain would stop selling all glue traps. Animals who become caught in glue traps often linger in agony for days before dying of dehydration, suffocation, or starvation. Some attempt to chew off their own limbs in order to escape. We applaud Dollar General for its compassionate and responsible decision.
PETA received calls of concern from JCPenney customers who were dismayed that the company was selling a product called "Planet Frog," a small aquarium kit that comes with a coupon to receive live tadpoles in the mail. After a harrowing journey by delivery truck, the tadpoles are placed in the small tank in which they mature into frogs and spend their entire lives. PETA wrote to JCPenney to explain the cruelty of subjecting frogs to life in a plastic prison and to request that the company stop selling the "Planet Frog" kits immediately. After hearing from PETA, JCPenney agreed to remove the product from its shelves.
2007 - Duane Read Stops Selling Cruel Glue Traps
After receiving more than 6,000 e-mail messages from PETA members and supporters, executives at New York-based drugstore chain Duane Reade agreed to meet with PETA representatives to discuss ending the sale of cruel glue traps and the company has since joined retailers like Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens in ceasing the sale of these "pans of pain" at all of its 250-plus locations.
2007 - Retailers Stop Selling Glue Traps
Retailers CVS, Rite Aid, Safeway, and Albertsons all ended the sale of glue traps after PETA staff members presented information on glue traps, the cruelest method of wildlife control. Animals trapped in these devices often linger in agony for days before dying of dehydration, suffocation, or starvation. Some attempt to chew off their own limbs in order to escape. We applaud these companies for their responsible decision.
2005 - Humane Euthanasia Ensured for California Skunks
PETA came to the rescue of skunks who were being trapped and killed with chloroform by San Gabriel, California, Humane Society officers. Chloroform is deemed unacceptable for euthanasia and hazardous to humans by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Officers are now euthanizing the skunks humanely with sodium pentobarbital.
