PETA’s Position on Breeding Companion Animals
PETA is not opposed when kind people share their lives and homes with animal companions whom they love and care for properly. However, we are very much opposed to the industry that supplies many animal companions. Breeding facilities, pet shops, and many kennels offer notoriously little comfort and care to the animals they breed and sell. Like all businesses, their goal is to turn a profit, not to improve animals’ lives. Pet stores acquire their animals from puppy mills, breeding kennels that are notorious for continually breeding unhealthy, hard-to-socialize animals in cramped, crude, and filthy conditions. All breeders, whether they are so-called “responsible” breeders or puppy mills, contribute to what has become an overwhelming overpopulation problem.
PETA encourages everyone with the time, money, and patience to properly care for an animal companion to adopt a sterilized cat or dog from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. Millions of homeless, unwanted animals are euthanized every year for lack of the necessary resources to give them the comfortable, happy lives that they deserve.
