PETA Fights Back With Protests Outside Restaurants Serving Foie Gras

PETA members are protesting today outside Hot’s Kitchen, a Los Angeles restaurant that’s threatening to serve foie gras once again after the reversal of California’s ban on selling the vile dish. The animal advocates will be holding graphic posters that show the violent force-feeding process as well as posters that bear the anti–foie gras cartoon released by a Charlie Hebdo cartoonist shortly before he was killed in the terrorist attack on the French magazine’s offices. PETA will also be protesting at One Market Restaurant in San Francisco.

Since a state law was passed banning foie gras in 2012, California diners could rest easy knowing that “torture in a tin” wouldn’t appear anywhere on their menus. In an upsetting move that hinges on a technicality, i.e., whether the liver is an “ingredient” or not, that law was overturned today by a U.S. District Court judge in Los Angeles.

Foie gras is made by shoving hard metal pipes down the throats of geese and ducks and force feeding them several times per day. The animals’ livers become diseased and swell to up to 10 times the normal size. The birds suffer greatly, are petrified of the next feedings – which occur several times a day – and can often not walk or groom themselves by the time they are killed, and are in total misery. Perhaps Gawker said it best in its recent post “Foie Gras Is For Assholes.”

PETA’s official statement on the matter is below:

Foie gras is French for fat liver, and Fathead is the American word for the shameless chefs who actually need a law to make them stop serving the bloated, near-bursting organ of a cruelly force-fed bird.  A line will be drawn in the sand outside any restaurant that goes back to serving this “torture in a tin” and whoever crosses that line identifies with gluttony that cannot control itself even to the point of torturing animals. And no one should forget that the court found that it is still illegal to force feed a bird and produce foie gras in California, although it now allows foie gras produced in other states that allow such cruelty, to be sold in California. The state will surely appeal the bad part of this ruling, and PETA believes that this decision will be reversed on appeal.

    after seeing the pictures, I’ll be avoiding those restaurants, for good…and they still think THAT liver will be HEALTHY for humans!

    With all the food choices humans have, why do we need to subject birds to this horrible experience ? I am so fed up with humans thinking they are entitled to wha ever they want regardless of consequences to others, especially when it comes to animals. humans cause more problems, murders ,thefts, corruption, rapes, terrorist, arson to name a few, yet the law caters to humans over animals. I have lost so much faith in humanity. There are still decent people in this world, but there is also so much evil.

    Maybe anyone ordering foie gras should be required to watch a short film clip on the hideous methods used to create this “delicacy”. A lot of people might just lose their appetite! I’ll bet at least half of the people who “indulge” in foie gras don’t even know how it is produced. Ignorance is a very ugly thing.

    I am normally against graphic and upsetting posts, but I do think diners should see EXACTLY what these animals have to go through to provide them with this cruel luxury item. I’m sure it will make some think again and refuse to eat it in the future.

    I worked with a wildbird rehab organization here in Denver and we rescued ducks and geese from parks that were losing a foot due to fishing line, attacked by dogs off-leash, botulism, etc. They have lost their habitat and have learned to live among us in peace but humans can be so cruel. How selfish is it to torture any animal for the few minutes of what these people think of as pleasure. They eat and then just go on their way in their lives not giving it a second thought. It’s terrible. We have to close down the facilities that produce this!

    Why would any person want to eat a diseased liver anyway? Ugh! Sick people eating, and selling sick livers. I wouldn’t want to be classified as part of that sick group who contributes to such cruelty. I’d be ashamed to enter such a restaurant. I hope the restaurant owners realize that many others won’t want to be associated with them — bad business!

    Whether its fatty liver or healthy one,the animal still has to loose a life painfully and often times cruelly.The bottom line being iif you eat meat you are part of the equation to animal cruelty.Vegetarian is the only answer.

Shame on the suppliers, chefs, and the consumers – this speaks to their profound inhumanity that despite being provided the knowledge they think this is still an acceptable fashion food. Thank you PETA for standing your ground and continuing to educate. I for one have never and will never support this industry.

    It is these cruel and inhumane acts at the hands of gluttonous and sick humans that has made it so easy for me to STOP eating meat, to stand up for animal rights and fight like hell for them for they cannot do it for themselves.
