In a nationwide battle royal to see who takes the cake, a local bakery run by teenage “kidpreneur” Jalen Bailey has come out in the top tier. Beating out eateries from across the country, Jalen’s Bakery clinched a spot on PETA’s list of the Top 10 Vegan Sweet Treats in the U.S. for its Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies. Crispy on the outside, with a satisfying chewy center, these fresh-baked and chocolate-packed treats are perfect for Valentine’s Day—or any day!

The bakery first opened in 2016, when Jalen was an ambitious 8-year-old striving to start a successful business so that he could buy his mother a house. Today, Jalen’s Bakery delivers locally to the Fresno area and—thanks to Jalen’s dedicated customers and supporters from around the world—he also ships baked goods nationwide “to put a smile on the faces of many.”

“Chowing down on Jalen’s cookies shows some love to a young entrepreneur—and at no cost to gentle hens and cows,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “All the eateries on PETA’s list prove that it’s as easy as vegan pie to dish out delicious treats that are also sweet to animals this Valentine’s Day.”

Consumers’ demand for vegan food out of concern for animals, the environment, and their health has sent the vegan food market skyrocketing: It grew two and a half times faster in 2021 than it did between 2018 and 2020, and it’s expected to reach $22 billion by 2025.

Other winners on PETA’s list include HaleLife Bakery, with locations in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, Florida; Riley’s Vegan Sweets and Eats in Peoria, Illinois; and Sprig & Vine in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers free vegan Valentine’s Day dessert recipes on its website along with a selection of sweet gifts from the PETA Shop.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
