Why You Should Skip Dairy

Here’s a shot of reality: Drinking cow’s milk is just plain cruel. From the moment they give birth, mother cows love, nurture, and protect their precious calves. They produce milk for the same reason humans do: to nourish their babies. In the dairy industry, workers tear newborn calves from their mothers when they are just one day old. Mothers often cry out for days in anguish when farmers sever this important bond. Farm workers repeatedly forcibly impregnate female cows so that they continue to produce milk, and the abusive cycle continues.

Cows have a natural lifespan of about 20 years and can produce milk for eight or nine years—but the stress they endure on farms often leads to disease, lameness, and reproductive problems. By the time cows on dairy farms are about four or five years old, they’re rendered worthless and sent to be slaughtered.

Not only is the dairy industry incredibly cruel, it’s also detrimental to the environment. A 2018 study estimates the production of dairy milk to be around three times more greenhouse-gas emission–intensive than the production of plant-based milks, and cow’s milk generally requires nine times more land than any of the plant-based options. A typical cow used for milk produces 120 pounds of waste each day—and when this manure is used as fertilizer, it can contaminate streams and lakes, destroy whole ecosystems, poison food products, and pollute the atmosphere with ammonia and methane.
