PETA’s Spay/Neuter Volunteer Campaign

In the U.S., homelessness is not just a human problem. On any given day, an estimated 70 million homeless dogs and cats are struggling to survive on the streets, where they face dangers such as traffic, extreme temperatures, contagious diseases, parasites, and predators (including cruel humans). There are too many animals and not enough good adoptive homes. You can help prevent this—become a spay/neuter volunteer!

Never Breed or Buy. Always Adopt. Always Have Animals Spayed or Neutered.

Please join countless other kind people who are working to prevent animal homelessness. Find out how you can help, and please pledge to do your part to end this crisis.

Every animal bred and born—on purpose or by accident—and every animal purchased from a breeder or a pet shop fills spot in a home that could have taken in a homeless dog or cat. Never breed or buy from breeders or pet stores, and always have animals spayed or neutered to work toward the goal of a “no-birth” nation.

The Goal: A ‘No-Birth’ Nation

The only way to make our communities “no-kill” is to work toward a “no-birth” nation through legislative measures that mandate spaying or neutering unless a proper permit is purchased, with permit revenue used solely to subsidize sterilization surgeries for animals belonging to low-income households. For a list of jurisdictions that have passed such laws, please click here.

Until most people have their animals spayed or neutered, euthanasia will remain a tragic necessity. No one wants to have to euthanize animals—least of all those who have dedicated their lives to helping them—but every day, animal shelter workers see fates far worse than a humane death: dying at the hands of mean people; being chained, neglected, and starved; dying of a protracted illness on the streets with no veterinary care; being considered a public health threat or a nuisance and treated as such; and more.

Be Part of the Solution

Sign our pledge stating that you will never buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder and that you will promote spaying and neutering. If you already have an animal companion in your family from a pet store or breeder, that’s OK—just pledge not to buy again.

Become a spay/neuter volunteer! We’re looking for volunteers to help people make lifesaving spay/neuter surgeries a reality for their animals. If you want to get more involved in your community, e-mail us for more information.
