There’s No Vegan Egg Shortage—Find Out Where PETA Is Shelling Out Free Vegan Egg Sandwiches
PETA has the solution to the egg shortage and bird flu crisis—vegan eggs! By opting for animal-free eggs, you can help save money and chickens exploited by the egg industry as egg prices reach record highs. PETA is showing just how easy—and tasty—it is to make the switch by handing out thousands of free vegan egg salad sandwiches nationwide.

Let’s Lay Out the Facts—5 Ways Chickens Pay the Highest Price for Eggs
The price of eggs has ALWAYS been too high for the more than 300 million hens suffering on egg farms every year in the U.S.
1. Male chicks are ground up alive. At hatcheries, workers grind up male chicks alive almost immediately after hatching because they’re considered “useless” to the egg industry.

2. Hens are genetically manipulated for profit. The egg industry genetically modifies chickens to produce more eggs than their body can keep up with. After about 2 years on farms, their bodies break down, and they are killed.
3. ‘Cage-free’ and ‘free-range’ labels are misleading. Companies cram hens into crowded sheds with little more than a square foot of floor space each.

4. Egg farms are breeding grounds for deadly diseases. Stressed chickens are forced to stand in their own feces—if they can even stand. These dirty sheds are the perfect conditions for bird flu. Since January 2025, farmers have killed more than 45 million chickens due to bird flu.
5. One bird flu case means mass killings. Workers killed more than 5 million chickens at one of the world’s largest egg factories after a single case of avian influenza was detected.
Chickens are highly intelligent, form deep social bonds, and even dream when they sleep. When able to express their natural behaviors, chickens spend their time foraging in dirt and grass with their friends.

Most hens spend their short miserable lives crammed inside wire-floored cages where they don’t even have enough room to spread their wings. When their bodies can no longer produce eggs, the gentle chickens are trucked to slaughterhouses. There, workers hang them upside down and their throats are slit before they’re dragged through scalding hot de-feathering tanks, often while still conscious.
