Thanks to PETA, 1 Hotels Drops Cruelty, Commits to Down-Free Bedding

After learning from PETA that some birds used for down are plucked alive, eco-conscious high-end boutique brand 1 Hotels agreed to start purchasing only down-free bedding.

The compassionate decision aligns with the brand’s vision to be a “platform for change” and to “lead hospitality forward.” While current locations will gradually transition to be completely down-free by purchasing only alternative-down bedding moving forward, all of its new, soon-to-open hotels will feature down-free bedding exclusively.

People who reject cruelty to animals want to support companies that share their values. 1 Hotels’ decision to use high-quality, feather-free bedding sets an example for the hospitality industry, showing that it’s possible to be cruelty-free without sacrificing luxury.

Currently, 1 Hotels operates two hotels in New York and one in Florida, with locations planned for California, Mexico, and China.

No matter where it comes from, down is a product of cruelty to birds.

The feathers used to stuff items like comforters and pillows often come from birds who have been cruelly force-fed to produce foie gras, while other down comes from geese whose feathers have been repeatedly ripped out of their sensitive skin with no pain relief.

Birds who aren’t plucked alive or force-fed still spend their entire lives in crowded, filthy conditions on factory farms before being killed in a violent manner at the slaughterhouse. They are often dumped into scalding hot defeathering tanks while still conscious and able to feel pain.

Ditching down is the compassionate choice, and it’s also the most environmentally sound one. Animal agriculture is a leading cause of greenhouse-gas emissions, and goose farms produce massive amounts of polluting manure and slaughter waste. Today’s vegan alternatives, however, come in environmentally friendly options and are often made from recycled materials.
