Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Wearing nothing but strategically placed lettuce leaves and holding signs that read, "Free Vegan Food," sexy PETA Lettuce Ladies will hand out delicious, free vegan bacon cheeseburgers to passersby in Grand Rapids on Saturday. The ladies will also give out copies of PETA's vegetarian/vegan starter kit in order to encourage people to participate in Michigan Meatout Day, which Gov. Jennifer Granholm has declared will be observed on Saturday.

Where:  Intersection of Monroe Center Street N.W. and Monroe Avenue N.W., Grand Rapids
When:    Saturday, March 20, 12 noon

Vegans are, on average, significantly trimmer than meat-eaters are, and they are less likely to suffer from heart disease, cancer, strokes, and diabetes. Also, a recent United Nations report concluded that raising animals for food produces more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, SUVs, trains, and planes in the world combined. And each year, the meat industry confines billions of animals to severely crowded spaces and subjects them to mutilations, injuries, and a terrifying death.

"By declaring a meat-free day, Gov. Granholm has demonstrated progressive thinking and has shown her concern for animals, people's health, and the environment," says Lettuce Lady Kristina Addington. "With an abundance of delicious vegan choices now available, there's never been a better time to make the switch to a kinder, gentler, healthier diet."
