Oakland, Calif. — A dog estimated to be 6 or 7 years old was dumped outside the Oakland Animal Shelter early on the morning of May 30. She was emaciated and had a chain and cord wrapped around her neck and legs so tightly that they were embedded in her skin, resulting in severely infected and maggot-infested wounds. Marlo, as the staff named the dog, also had bones protruding through her skin, and her organs were beginning to shut down. Oakland Animal Services Director David Cronin said during an interview, “This dog was rotting to death.” Marlo was euthanized on a veterinarian’s recommendation, and a necropsy revealed that she had been attempting to keep herself alive by eating sticks and dirt. Although police have recovered surveillance video that could reveal who abandoned the dog at the shelter, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

That’s why PETA is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

“Judging by the deteriorated state of this dog’s injuries and internal condition, she must have been suffering from neglect for months,” says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. “We join Oakland Animal Services in calling on neighbors and passersby who surely saw Marlo at some point recently to come forward with any information that might help the police nab the criminal responsible.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Oakland Police Department at 510-777-3333.
