For Immediate Release:June 1, 2010
Contact:Michael Lyubinsky 757-622-7382Norfolk, Va. -- Top athletes across the sports spectrum--including slugger Prince Fielder, Olympic great Carl Lewis, NFL running back Ricky Williams, and mixed martial arts fighter Mac Danzig--have kicked the meat habit, and a trip to ballpark concession stands confirms that many fans are getting the message too. That's why PETA has ranked the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks.
"The days when a meatless meal at the ballpark meant peanuts or popcorn are gone," says PETA Director Dan Shannon. "With so many delicious animal- and Earth-friendly vegetarian options available, every team in the league--and every fan--can be a winner."
When it comes to the array of meatless selections available at ballparks across the country, the Philadelphia Phillies are in a league of their own. For the fourth year in a row, Citizens Bank Park lays claim to the title of the most vegetarian-friendly ballpark. The delicious new vegan breaded chicken sandwich put the Phillies over the top--especially when added to a stellar lineup that includes protein-packed veggie burgers, veggie hot dogs, Southwestern black-bean burgers, veggie steak sandwiches, mock chicken steaks, and the new vegan Rice Crispie treats.
The San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park has grabbed second place thanks to the addition of its new mixed-vegetable sandwich--a veritable meal on a bun. Other delights include vegetable sushi rolls, veggie burritos, meatless tamales, edamame, and hearty veggie burgers and veggie dogs. Rounding out the top five are Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros), Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers), and Coors Field (Colorado Rockies). In the minor leagues, Municipal Stadium--a rookie on PETA's list and home of the Hagerstown Suns--took top honors for offering pepper and onion Philly "cheesesteak" sandwiches with vegan mozzarella and great meatless burgers and veggie dogs with vegan cheese.
Each major- and minor-league team to make the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete list of winners, please click here.
