Los Angeles -- Anne Hathaway gave a whole new meaning to "captivating" as Catwoman in the latest blockbuster film in the Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises. In time for World Farm Animals Day, the perennial front-runner in PETA's annual Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest is being honored by PETA for her vegan lifestyle and for specifying that her recent wedding to Adam Shulman be 100 percent vegan.
The animal rights organization has sponsored a calf named Peter—who was rescued from a filthy and abusive Pennsylvania dairy factory farm and is now thriving at The Cow Sanctuary in Shiloh, N.J.—in Hathaway's name to commemorate her wedding as well as World Farm Animals Day. Peter was infested with lice and suffering from ringworm and pinkeye when he was rescued, and he was nearly drowning amid urine and feces in the pen in which he was confined.
"By going vegan, Anne is doing the best thing that she can to better her health and save calves like Peter from a life of suffering," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Anne is living proof that vegans are beautiful from the inside out."
Male calves on dairy farms are torn away from their mothers shortly after birth, and many are confined to tiny veal crates. Females are forced into milk production, and a high percentage of them are lame because of the filth and intensive confinement on factory farms and the strain of being constantly pregnant.
PETA is proud to recognize Hathaway's compassion. She joins many celebrities, including Carrie Underwood, Alicia Silverstone, Joaquin Phoenix, Bill Clinton, Woody Harrelson, Natalie Portman, and Casey Affleck, in enjoying healthy, humane, eco-friendly meat-free lifestyles.
World Farm Animals Day, which is held on October 2, aims to educate the public about factory farming and memorialize the 65 billion land animals raised for food who suffer and die every year. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
