Denver — Featuring a voluptuous brunette with a string of sausages draped around her neck—along with the words, "I Threw a Party, but the Cattlemen Couldn't Come. Eating meat can cause impotence. Go vegan!"—PETA's new billboard has been shut out of Denver. The group had hoped to have the ad up in time to coincide with the Cattle Industry Annual Convention and National Cattlemen's Beef Association Trade Show, which starts tomorrow, but the city's outdoor advertisers had other ideas. One wrote, "The direct sexual innuendo is the biggest problem. The word 'come' then directly talking about impotence leaves little to the imagination. And the girl holding sausage links around her neck on top of that—it's all too much."
"PETA wants to turn clogged-up carnivores on to the wonders of 'veggie Viagra'—vegan cooking—as an easy way to make the world a happier place for animals and lovers," says PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman. "A man who stuffs his belly full of dead animals in the kitchen might just end up delivering dead wood in the bedroom."
Heart disease—which has been strongly linked to eating meat and other animal-derived products primarily because of their high cholesterol and saturated fat content—was significantly correlated with erectile dysfunction in the highly regarded Massachusetts Male Aging Study. Medical science suggests that heart disease, and therefore erectile dysfunction, can be reversed, alleviated, or even prevented by eating a healthy vegan diet. And according to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are also less prone to cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are.
On today's factory farms, cattle are often castrated, branded, and dehorned without being given any painkillers, and many are dismembered in slaughterhouses while they're still conscious because poorly functioning bolt guns fail to stun them.
