Salmon, Idaho -- Local residents suspect that as many as 10 dogs were poisoned to death in Salmon's Bar Hill area between early January and February 23. The dogs' guardians have said that the animals suffered horrific pain and distress before dying. According to news sources, one dog vomited, foamed at the mouth, and lost bowel control before dying. Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the alleged dog poisonings. That is why PETA is offering up to $1,000, in addition to $1,000 offered by the Lemhi County Humane Society, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these violent crimes.

PETA believes that other animals in the area--and even human residents--might be in danger as long as those responsible for these crimes are at large. The group is urging residents not to leave animals outside unattended.

"Animal abusers are cowards," says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. "They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Area residents have good reason to be concerned. According to law enforcement agencies and leading mental health professionals, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals--including humans."

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Lemhi County Sheriff's Office at 208-756-8980.
