Norfolk, Va. -- An update to PETA's social media campaign against Donna Karan's use of fur.
This afternoon, peta2—PETA's youth division—used innovative social media in what may be the first use of a text to inspire subscribers to take action in behalf of animals via e-mail. And the subscribers didn't even need to use their computers! The group sent out a text message to the members of its mobile street team and asked them to send a message to Donna Karan executives demanding an end to the use of fur in the company's designs.
The peta2 message reads, "Donna Karan is a bunny butcher! Reply Y to this msg & we'll send a msg from you (right now!) telling her execs to dump fur once & for all. Thanks! <3peta2." If subscribers reply "Y," an e-mail from them will be sent to Donna Karan executives. Over 2,000 e-mail messages have already been sent.
PETA has sent Donna Karan executives detailed information about the suffering of animals who are raised and killed for their fur, and thousands of people have taken action against the designer, who continues to use rabbit fur from China. Undercover investigations have revealed that animals on Chinese fur farms are hung upside down, screaming and kicking, and are forced to watch those ahead of them die violently before their own throats are cut.
Many top fashion designers—including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger—are 100 percent fur-free.
