Miramar, Fla. — On Monday, the Miramar Fire-Rescue Department responded to a call that a kitten had become stuck in a drain under a Miramar parking lot. The "drain" ended up being a light pole that the kitten had somehow fallen into, becoming trapped in the section that extends underground. After crews removed most of the pole, firefighter Gina Hudson was able to reach down and lift the kitten to safety. For their actions, the Miramar Fire-Rescue Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award. Hudson named the cat Lucky and has adopted her. PETA commends Hudson for being a responsible guardian by planning to have Lucky spayed.

"The firefighters and rescuers showed great ingenuity and compassion in saving Lucky," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Miramar is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve not only human residents but also homeless cats."

The department will receive a framed certificate, some vegan chocolates, and an oxygen mask designed specifically for cats, dogs, and other animals. Hudson and Lucky will receive a gift basket that includes a catnip ball, some toys, and a copy of 250 Things You Can Do to Make Your Cat Adore You by PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk.
