New York -- Clad in a skin-tight latex dress that shows off all her curves—and all her tattoos—alternative model and NY Ink tattoo artist Megan Massacre is the star of a brand-new pro-vegetarian campaign for peta2, PETA's youth division, that declares, "I Am Megan Massacre, and I Am a Vegetarian." The ad (available here), which was shot by top photographer Jonathan Weiner, goes on to explain that vegetarian meals are the best way to help your health, the environment, and animals.
"[I]t makes me feel good knowing that I can enjoy food just as much as the next person, but I didn't have to kill an animal to eat it," explains Massacre in an exclusive video interview with peta2. "[Y]ou're eating a burger, and you're eating a cow, and … that's an animal, too. I would never want to eat my fish or my dog—those are your friends. … [T]hey're our companions. … Your dog is your best friend, and I would never want to eat my best friend."
Each person who goes vegetarian spares more than 100 animals a year from extreme suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats. Vegetarians also help the environment since the meat industry is responsible for enormous amounts of water pollution, land degradation, and emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.
Based in The Wooster Street Social Club tattoo studio, Massacre has been featured in tattoo magazines around the world. In addition to her work on TLC's NY Ink, Massacre recently appeared in America's Worst Tattoos. She and her boyfriend, Joe Letz of Combichrist, DJ together under the name Letz Massacre.
Massacre joins a long list of musicians, artists, and other celebrities—including Ami James, Lacuna Coil, Sabina Kelley, The Agonist's Alissa White-Gluz, Dave Navarro, Animal Collective, Tommy Lee, and Mario Barth—who have teamed up with peta2 to promote animal protection.
