Indianapolis — First came Major League Baseball in 2002, followed by the NFL in 2008. Now, for the first time, thanks to the explosion in vegetarian options at sports venues across the continent, PETA has ranked the top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas, and Bankers Life Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers, is number nine.
"Indiana faithful should be proud, as suffocating defense and physical play have kept the Pacers in the mix in the East without Danny Granger," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "And when fans at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse work up an appetite, coming away from the concession stands with healthy, humane, and delicious vegetarian food is a slam dunk."
Topping PETA's list of favorites at Bankers Life Fieldhouse is the vegan sloppy Joe with soy-based tempeh, peppers, onions, and brown-sugar barbecue sauce. In addition to the vegan sloppy Joe, the veggie burger is sure to please even the most discriminating palate. Fans in the suites sections can also enjoy the grilled flatbread sandwich with marinated tofu, pesto, and chipotle Vegenaise; spicy rice noodles with ginger-pickled red cabbage; udon noodles with cabbage, carrots, and toasted peanuts in peanut dressing; and toasted quinoa.
STAPLES Center, home to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, came in first place for its vegan sloppy Joes, veggie burger, vegan sushi, and grilled-veggie sandwich, followed by runner-up Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors, with its chutney-topped Bollywood veggie dog, vegetarian burrito, and lettuce, tomato, and scallion veggie dog. Rounding out the top 10 are the Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia 76ers), the BMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors), the Rose Garden (Portland Trail Blazers), the United Center (Chicago Bulls), the AT&T Center (San Antonio Spurs), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Pistons).
