Chicago — First came Major League Baseball in 2002, followed by the NFL in 2008. Now, for the first time, thanks to the explosion in vegetarian options at sports venues across the continent, PETA has ranked the top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas, and the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, has grabbed seventh place.
"Regardless of when Derrick Rose returns, the delicious meat-free fare at the arena will keep Bulls fans smiling," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "And when fans work up an appetite and hit the arena's concession stands, coming away with healthy, humane, and delicious vegetarian fare is a slam-dunk."
Topping PETA's favorites were the vegan sloppy Joes with soy-based tempeh, peppers, onions, and brown-sugar barbecue sauce, followed by the satisfying veggie burgers. Discriminating Bulls fans can also chow down on baked potatoes as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Taking first place was the STAPLES Center, home to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, thanks to vegan sloppy Joes, the hearty veggie burger, the grilled-vegetable sandwiches, and the savory edamame. Second place went to the Toronto Raptors' Air Canada Centre for its vegetarian burritos, grilled vegetable and arugula panini, vegan fajitas, and Bollywood veggie dogs with potato, tamarind ketchup, papadum, and mint chutney.
Rounding out the top 10 are the Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia 76ers), the BMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors), the Rose Garden (Portland Trail Blazers), the AT&T Center (San Antonio Spurs), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indiana Pacers), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Pistons).
