Greenville, Del. — For rescuing a dog named Boo from the icy waters of a pond near Carriage Road, the Elsmere Fire Company and Cranston Heights Fire Company will each receive PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award.

Last Friday, rescue crews from Elsmere and Cranston Heights responded to a 911 call after Boo fell through thin ice approximately 50 feet from shore and became trapped in the freezing water. Firefighters borrowed a neighbor's boat and hacked through 3-inch-thick ice to reach Boo, whom they wrapped in blankets and returned safely to shore. Boo's guardians took him to a veterinary hospital, and he is now safe at home with his family.

"The compassion and heroism shown by the Elsmere and Cranston Heights fire companies is an inspiration," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Greenville is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animal companions."

The fire departments will each receive a framed certificate, vegan chocolates, and a letter of appreciation.
