Philadelphia -- Taking top honors never gets old, which is great news for fans of the Philadelphia Phillies because for the fourth year in a row Citizens Bank Park (CBP) has finished first in PETA's annual ranking of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks. Not a ballpark that rests on its laurels, CBP has added a phenomenal new vegan breaded chicken sandwich to a stellar lineup that includes a faux crab-cake salad (also available as a sandwich or wrap), protein-packed veggie burgers and veggie dogs, a Southwestern black-bean burger, a veggie steak sandwich, a mock chicken steak, and the new vegan Rice Crispie treat.
"It's hard to say if the Phillies' biggest offseason acquisition was ace Roy Halladay or the new faux chicken sandwich and vegan Rice Crispie treat offered at concession stands," says PETA Director Dan Shannon. "Add in Citizens Bank Park's other meat-free fare, and this ballpark has quickly become the first undisputed dynasty in the history of PETA's prestigious rankings."
"Being named the most vegetarian-friendly ballpark for the fourth straight year is quite an honor," said Chrissy Flanigan, general manager at Citizens Bank Park for food and beverage provider ARAMARK. "We're continually working with the Phillies and the fans to diversify our menus, and it's clear Citizens Bank Park's vegetarian options continue to be a grand slam."
The San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park has grabbed second place thanks to the addition of its new mixed-vegetable sandwich--a veritable meal on a bun. Other delights include vegetable sushi rolls, veggie burritos, meatless tamales, edamame, and hearty veggie burgers and veggie dogs. Rounding out the top 10 are Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros), Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers), Coors Field (Colorado Rockies), Turner Field (Atlanta Braves), PETCO Park (San Diego Padres), Angel Stadium (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers), and Target Field (Minnesota Twins) and Progressive Field (Cleveland Indians), which tied for 10th place.
Top athletes across the sports spectrum--including slugger Prince Fielder, Olympic great Carl Lewis, NFL running back Ricky Williams, and mixed martial arts fighter Mac Danzig--have kicked the meat habit, and a trip to ballpark concession stands confirms that fans are getting the message too.
Each major-league team to make the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete list of winners, please click here
