Brooklyn, N.Y. -- What do Heroes hottie Milo Ventimiglia and country music crooner Kellie Pickler have in common? They are the reigning king and queen of PETA's annual Sexiest Vegetarian Alive contest. PETA has now expanded the contest to include the Sexiest Vegetarians Next Door--one male and one female--and 25-year-old Brooklyn resident Matt Mims beat out hundreds of other entrants from across the U.S. to become one of 10 male contestants to advance to the final round.
Mims went vegetarian in college. After realizing that there was no need to eat animals in order to build muscle, he decided to take advantage of his dining hall's vegetarian options. Mims is now vegan, and so is his twin brother. Even his father, whom he describes as a "Texas-raised barbecue guy," has cut back on meat consumption. In 2006, Mims--who plays in a band that promotes animal rights through its music--graduated from Princeton University, where he studied anthropology and wrote his 100-page senior thesis on how to combat discrimination against other species. He enjoys hiking, playing Frisbee, reading, and anything related to music.
"On average, vegetarians are slimmer and healthier than meat-eaters are, and that makes them sexier too," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman, who notes that vegetarians get all the protein, vitamins, and other nutrients that they need without consuming all the cholesterol and saturated fats that are found in meat and dairy products. "One look at our radiant lineup of sexy finalists and it's clear that they're all winners."

Each winner will spend seven nights in beautiful Maui, courtesy of the PETA Member Advantage Program.

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights? Read more.
