Washington, D.C. -- Outside the Canadian Embassy in Washington on Wednesday, three nearly naked PETA members will have their bodies painted to resemble the Canadian flag and hold a banner reading, "Stop the Canadian Seal Slaughter." Other PETA supporters will hand out leaflets and show a new TV spot encouraging tourists to avoid Canada and "explore elsewhere" until the seal slaughter ends.

When:   Wednesday, June 30, 12 noon

Where:  Canadian Embassy, 501 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. (at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. and Constitution Avenue N.W.), Washington, D.C.

The demonstration will take place on the eve of Canada Day, a national holiday that is celebrated on July 1. It is the latest salvo in PETA's campaign to stop the largest massacre of marine mammals in the world. During the annual slaughter, seal pups have their heads bashed in or are shot while other babies watch in fear and try in vain to get away. Many animals are skinned alive.

"Canadians have many reasons to feel patriotic, but this annual massacre is the nation's bloody shame," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Until Canada stops the seal slaughter, compassionate tourists should explore elsewhere."
