Forest Knolls, Calif. -- After more than 15,000 votes were tallied to help PETA choose the winners, 50-year-old Forest Knolls resident Carlyn Montes De Oca beat out hundreds of other entrants to be crowned the female winner of PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50 contest. Montes De Oca will be featured on PETAPrime.com, PETA's baby boomer–focused website. She won an exclusive PETA Prime prize pack, consisting of a $125 gift certificate for her choice of PETA Catalog merchandise as well as a copy of Michael Feinstein's American Songbook DVD package and other prizes.
"Carlyn is living proof that going vegan is a great way to protect your health, boost your energy, and ramp up your sex appeal at any age," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "After all, what's sexier than someone who exudes passion and compassion?"
Like many vegans and vegetarians, Montes De Oca gets looks of disbelief when asked her age. "People regularly ask me how I can look so young," says Montes De Oca, who attributes her sex appeal to her veggie-powered high-energy level and her passion for life. "I tell them it's the fuel I put into my body and life only gets better after 50. I must admit, their words are flattering to hear, but it's also a validation of a lifestyle I truly believe in and live."
Montes De Oca went vegetarian 18 years ago and has never looked back. She also will not wear wool, silk, or leather or use any product tested on animals. In fact, she doesn't believe in laboratory experiments on animals for any reason. She donates a portion of the proceeds from her acupuncture and nutritional counseling business, Modern Alchemy, to animal rescue organizations, and she tweets about ways to help animals every chance she gets.
PETA chose the winners based on four factors: the finalists' total number of votes, their enthusiasm in promoting their entry, their potential to reach a large audience, and PETA's assessment of their physical attractiveness.
