The scorching summer heat is here, and PETA’s doghouse program is hard at work supplying lifesaving shelter to dogs left outdoors—often without the basic necessities for survival—and to help, v-dog is kicking off a matching gift–style donation drive. For every donation made to PETA’s doghouse program in July, the dog food company will donate 5 pounds of its Kinder Kibble—up to a total of 6,000 pounds (3 tons)—for PETA to give to neglected “backyard dogs.”

“A doghouse is no substitute for a real home indoors with the rest of the family, but it makes a world of difference to dogs who would otherwise spend all summer with scant protection from the burning sun,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “v-dog’s generous support will help PETA provide even more neglected animals with some desperately needed shade and a nutritious meal.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—helps dogs who are tied up 24 hours a day, sometimes with nothing more than a card table, a plastic carrier, or an overturned trash can or barrel for shelter, if they have any shelter at all. Since 2000, PETA’s doghouse program has delivered more than 6,500 sturdy shelters to “outdoor dogs” in Virginia and North Carolina—along with lightweight tie-outs to replace heavy chains, flea and tick treatments, healthy food, clean water, and loving attention.
