With Earth Day right around the corner, PETA wants to make sure that Regina residents know that although auto emissions spell trouble for the atmosphere, raising animals for food is even worse. That’s why the group has deployed a pair of sexy petrol pin-ups to dispense $5 worth of free gasoline to the first 25 customers at the Esso station on Albert Street, along with free delicious vegan jerky. The lovely duo will be holding signs that read, “Fill Up on Clean Energy: Go Vegan.” The giveaway will begin at noon on Thursday.

“In a time of rising concern for the environment, we’re going the extra mile to help Regina residents fill up on eco-friendly vegan fuel for their tummies and gas for their tanks,” says petrol pin-up Emily Lavender.

Many people believe they’re doing their part to protect the environment by driving less and using less water and electricity. But the meat, egg, and dairy industries are among the three biggest contributors to the most serious environmental problems we face—destruction of the rain forests, water shortages, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Also, a recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change. In fact, researchers at the University of Chicago determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective at countering climate change than switching from a standard car to a hybrid. And of course, eating meat, eggs, and dairy products causes animal suffering on a massive scale and has been linked to consumers’ risk of developing heart disease, cancer, and other killer diseases.
