PETA Gives Award to Family Who Rescued Elderly Man and His Beloved Dog From Flood

Group Throws Rescued Man a Bone; Staff Donates More Than $1,000 for Pair Pulled From Flooded Car

A Compassionate Action Award is on its way from PETA to the Hall family, who came to the rescue of 87-year-old George Osterhues and his dog, Tila, when flood water filled their car and left them trapped. Tom Hall pulled Osterhues and Tila out through the car window, and all three were then dragged to safety through the rapid current by Julie Hall and their young sons. Osterhues and Tila were each given a warm meal and a place to sleep for a few nights. PETA staff is now “passing the dog bowl” for Osterhues and Tila—collecting donations to help them recover from their loss and relocate to be near family. Thus far, the donations have amounted to more than $1,000.

“Thanks to the quick action and bravery of the Hall family, George Osterhues and his beloved companion are safe today,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their kindness will inspire others to come to the aid of people and animals in need whenever they encounter them.”

Although Osterhues’ car was totaled and he lost many of his belongings in the flood, he told PETA that he’s thankful to have Tila, who is most important to him. “The losses I have I don’t care for,” he said. “I have my dog. Everything is replaceable, but my dog is not.”

The Hall family will receive a framed certificate and a box of delicious vegan cookies. PETA is also sending dog toys for Tila.
