PETA’s Sudsy Supporters Will Point Out That Eating Vegan Is the Most Effective Way to Conserve Water

What: Nearly naked behind signs that read, “1 Steak = 50 Baths,” two PETA beauties will sit in a bathtub full of bubbles on a street corner on Wednesday, just half a mile from the 20th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit, where President Barack Obama and other political heavyweights will gather to discuss the lake’s preservation. PETA’s message? The least expensive and most effective way to conserve water is to ditch meat and dairy foods, as each person who goes vegan saves around 219,000 gallons of water a year.

“What better time than the Lake Tahoe Summit to rally against the meat and dairy industries, which guzzle our water supply and spew out environmental contaminants?” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on everyone who cares about the environment to save water and reduce animal suffering by going vegan.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that in addition to wasting massive amounts of water, the industrialized meat and dairy industries produce runoff that is a leading cause of river and lake pollution.
