PETA has long known that meat hot dogs come with a slew of unsavory ingredients, including dangerous carcinogens, heart-stopping cholesterol and saturated animal fats, glass shards, rodent parts, and a lot of cruelty. That’s why the group set out to find the Top Five Vegan Hot Dogs in America in the run-up to the Fourth of July, and the Calcutta Cur—topped with Indian-style mango salsa—at Dogtown in Rochester has received an honorable mention.

Dogtown offers at least 15 varieties of veggie dogs every day and also serves grilled portobello sandwiches, meat-free Italian sausage, and three varieties of handmade veggie burgers: spinach-tofu, mushroom-walnut, and Jamaican black bean. Dogtown is also proud to have been recognized for having the best veggie chili in town.

“The Fourth of July marks the birth of our nation, so when it comes to celebrating it with a couple of hot dogs, go vegan and give your whole body a reason to cheer,” says PETA Special Projects Manager Alicia Woempner. “After all, if you take the carcinogens, body parts, and fear out of a meat hot dog, you’re pretty much left with an empty bun.”

The winners are the Holiday Dog at The Vegan Hot Dog Cart in Orlando, Fla.; the Rockaway Beach at Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace in Columbus, Ohio;the Patt Morrison Baja Vegan Dog at Pink’s in Los Angeles; the Vegan House Special at Dreamy Weenies in New Orleans; and the Soy Veggie Dog at Mustard’s Last Stand in Denver and Boulder, Colo. Also garnering an honorable mention is DC-3 in Washington, D.C.

All the winners will receive a framed certificate and a letter of congratulations from PETA.
