Sante Fe, N.M. -- Wearing a short red dress and a jaunty hat—and accompanied by an activist dressed as a fox and holding a sign reading, "Happy Fur-Free Holidays"—PETA’s Sexy Santa will hand out free candy canes to spectators at the Canyon Road Farolito Walk to remind them that animals killed for fur never get to experience a moment of comfort and joy.
Date: Sunday, December 24
Time: 6 p.m.
Place: Canyon Road and Paseo de Peralta
Why does PETA’s Sexy Santa want to relegate fur to Christmas Past? Animals on fur farms are killed by poisoning, electrocution, or neck-breaking. In the wild, animals are bludgeoned or drowned after being caught in steel-jaw traps. PETA has obtained undercover video footage from a fur farm in China—now the world’s leading fur exporter—in which animals are slammed on the ground and skinned alive. Fur from China is sold in virtually every mall in the U.S.
"Shoppers can find faux fur and other stylish coats and trim everywhere from Santa Claus Lane to 34th Street," says Sexy Santa Christy Griffin. "We’re asking people to cross fur off their lists this year and give everyone—including animals—a reason to celebrate the holiday season."
