New York -- As Anna Wintour signed T-shirts for people waiting in line at Macy's "Fashion's Night Out" event, she was caught off guard and accosted by an anti-fur protester waving a sign reading, "Anna: Fur Shame." The Vogue editor looked shocked and confused as the protester was dragged away in handcuffs, chanting, as the throng of PETA protesters gathered outside the venue looked on.
PETA is pressuring Ms. "Nuclear" Wintour to stop promoting fur in the pages of Vogue, pointing out that animals trapped in the wild often suffer for days before they're stomped or bludgeoned to death. Animals on filthy fur factory farms go mad when they're confined to tiny wire cages in all weather extremes before they are poisoned, injected with weedkiller, crudely gassed, anally electrocuted, or--as often happens--skinned alive. PETA has sent Wintour various videos of undercover investigations of the fur industry. The videos take a strong stomach to watch and a cold heart to ignore.
"There is nothing remotely 'fashionable' about abusing and slaughtering animals for fur," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "As long as she promotes fur, Anna Wintour will be reminded that she is personally responsible for cruelty to animals."
Today was not the first time that Wintour was accosted because of her support for fur. She was once served a dead-raccoon lunch at Four Seasons, has been doused with flour, and was hit with two separate pies that were tossed her way by animal rights supporters in France.
