Montreal -- Lying "bloody" and nearly naked on a Canadian flag -- its maple leaf streaming with "blood"-- a PETA member will expose the truth about the annual Canadian seal slaughter at Montreal's Canada Day parade on Wednesday. Other PETA members will hold signs emblazoned with a parody of the Olympic logo, which shows a sealer about to club a baby seal. The action is the latest salvo in PETA's campaign, which will continue up to and through the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
When: Wednesday, July 1, 10-11 a.m.
Where: Northwest corner of Rue Peel and De Maisonneuve Boulevard (near the Metro), Montreal
This year, three-fourths of the nearly 300,000 harp seals expected to be killed were spared, in part because the price of seal fur has plummeted as international outrage against the seal slaughter rises. The European Union and the U.S. have banned seal products, and world leaders -- including bear hunter Vladimir Putin -- have spoken out against the massacre.
"Canada's reputation is sinking as fast as the demand for its seal fur," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "As Canada celebrates its unity, people around the world are uniting to end the bloody annual massacre."
