Omaha, Neb. -- A PETA member dressed as Ronald McDonald will hang a giant chicken upside-down from scaffolding outside an Omaha McDonald's restaurant and slash the bird's throat under a banner that reads, "McDonald's Cuts Live Animals' Throats." The public slaughter is a protest against the suffering endured by the millions of chickens raised and killed for McDonald's each year. It's PETA's latest action against McDonald's since the group declared an end to the moratorium on its campaign against the fast-food giant.
When: Tuesday, April 28, 12 noon
Where: Outside McDonald's, 4404 N 30th St., Omaha
Why is PETA once again targeting the Golden Arches? The group suspended its McCruelty campaign in 2000 after McDonald's agreed to adopt some basic animal welfare measures, but the company has since refused to eliminate the worst abuses of animals killed by its suppliers. Chickens raised and killed for McDonald's are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled under their own weight. Millions have their throats cut while they are still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.
"McDonald's means McCruelty in our book," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "On behalf of the millions of chickens who can't speak for themselves, everyone should tell McDonald's, 'We're hatin' it!'"
